Mérida International (MID) is 25 minutes from the city. Cancún (CUN) is 3 hours away by car — beautiful and super safe highway, but you will pay tolls.

A last-minute checklist for a smooth trip.
Passport
Bring a passport valid at least 6 months past your travel date. You'll receive an FMM tourist entry electronically or on paper — keep it, you'll need it to leave.
Currency (MXN)
Mexican pesos. Cards work at most restaurants and hotels; you'll want cash for markets, small taxis, visit ruins, cenotes, and tips. ATMs at HSBC, Santander, and BBVA branches are the safest choices. Santander and BBVA ATMS usually give you the best rate. Avoid using a multi-bank ATM, they have the worst rates.
Tipping
10–15% at restaurants (check the bill; sometimes included). 20–50 pesos for a taxi driver's help with bags, 20–30 pesos for hotel housekeeping per day.
Mobile data (eSIM)
Check with your carrier first — many US plans include coverage or roaming in Mexico, so you may not need anything extra. If yours doesn't, an eSIM from Airalo, Holafly, or Nomad works well (5–10 GB gets most travelers through a week), or grab a physical SIM from Telcel at OXXO (convenience stores in Mexico) for strong local coverage.
Electricity
Mexico uses US-style Type A/B plugs at 127V/60Hz. Your US and Canadian chargers work directly.
Safety
Mérida consistently ranks as one of the safest cities in Mexico and the Americas. Normal urban common sense applies — don't flash valuables, use Uber.
Basic Spanish phrases
'Buenos días' (good morning), 'gracias' (thank you), 'por favor' (please), 'la cuenta, por favor' (the check please), 'sin hielo' (no ice).
December weather
Highs around 29 °C / 85 °F, lows around 19 °C / 66 °F. Humid but not oppressive. Pack breathable layers, a wrap for evenings, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent for cenote days.
What to pack
Sunscreen (SPF 50+), reef-safe if you're swimming in cenotes; sunglasses; a refillable bottle to fill from your hotel purifier; comfortable walking shoes; small day bag; light rain layer just in case.
